Coarseness is not a disadvantage. Just try executing such rough designs on a finely knotted carpet. The vigor is lost and there is an air of trying too hard, the city slicker imitating or parodying the country bumpkin. For a carpet that originally was aimed at the middle class, the range, imagination, and individuality of examples is noteworthy. Our example seems to be unique. The warm straw-ecru field features a ragged central balanced motif organizing bent and broken brown ragged brown twigs developing torn leaves, florets, and barbed foliage. The devices are outlined and filled with shades of brown, straw and khaki. The elements are generally quite small and there is plenty of field to give them freedom of movement. Two larger layered barbed palmettes accent the central vertical axis. The burnt salmon-buff main border shows assorted barbed leaves and loosely drawn palmettes. This is a village carpet? Well, a rather large one, not your usual scatter 4 x 6 or room size 9 x 12. Sultanabad carpets were woven in the Arak\/Markazi province, around the town of Sultanabad, from the mid-1880’s until WWI, under the aegis and contracts of Western carpet firms, primarily Ziegler and Hotz. Neither firm marked their carpets, but it has been the modern trade practice to attribute quality Sultanabad's to Ziegler. Ziegler had a centralized dye works, design studio, wool processing operation and washing facility, but no workshops, the actual weaving being farmed out to local household ateliers. The patterns were distributed via sampler mats (wagirehs), the knot density and color palettes were assigned, and sufficient wool and foundational cotton were also given out. This splendid carpet must have been woven from a set of extremely well-drawn samplers.\r\nThe desirable rust-red madder field shows a classically derived allover pattern of knotted cloud bands, large and complex ragged palmettes, smaller palmettes, slender vinery, leaves and diminutive florets. The accent tones include cream, pale green, straw, and light brown. The taupe main border shows a repeating pattern of double barbed leaves, octogramme rosettes, trefoil palmettes, tilted petal palmettes and supporting vinery. A rust-red plain border frames the whole. The use of plain, field tone borders on larger Persian carpets including Heriz\/Bakshayesh and Bidjar weavings is particularly evident in the later 19th century. The knotting is typically coarser which creates the soft look in the design and is on an all-cotton foundation. The pile is of medium density, not tightly packed. What could be more luxurious than a gigantic silver carpet? Oushak carpets were woven in any size and this oversize example has a unique silver-gray overall tonality with just the barest hint of a pattern. The pile wool has a particularly glowing patina without being of the shiny Angora type. The wool is excellent, high quality Turkish wool, clipped in the Spring and carefully selected. The workshop must have had early access to the best wool from the tribal suppliers. It was machine-carded to ensure an even, fine grade. Machine carding superseded hand carding in Turkey, Persia and India by 1900 and it gives a much superior product, uniform and perfect for the finest carpet work. The fibers are smoothly aligned and ready for handspinning. All the best oriental rugs, as here, use hand spun wool which is preferable to machine spun which gives a flat, overly regular texture. To fully appreciate this carpet, it must be seen in a room setting, with furniture. Far better than any broadloom carpeting could be, it integrates a room into an organic decorative whole. It accomplishes this without any overt design elements visually pulling or pushing things about. The enormous scale of this semi-monochrome carpet indicates that it was a very special order for a very large room. The accompanying illustration of the carpet in a semi-traditional room setting shows just how effective is its organizational character. The carpet completes the room, giving it a wholeness and completeness it would otherwise lack. However, the almost severe minimality of this piece also renders it highly effective in the most contemporary context imaginable. In a large, light-filled loft, consider how strongly it would tie together the most ultra-modern furnishings. There are so many different types of side viewed, sectioned palmettes that they serve as virtually a survey of traditional Persian rug design motives. To describe each one would take an essay at least. Some are classic, going back to the sixteenth century, while others are later design innovations. They float, move and swirl on the old gold ground. Curved lancet leaves add to the sense of fantasy. The royal blue border is more disciplined with botehs and curved leaves bracketing in-and-out and diagonal palmettes. The extremely well-drawn pattern flows under the border giving the effect of a frame superimposed on a continuous flow of fanciful floral elements. The origin of the palmette lies back in Chinese art with the lotus and the peony, but these elements are totally beyond their sources. The tradition of animals in a dense forest as a Persian carpet design goes back to the sixteenth century and is one of the main inspirations in the revival of rug weaving in Iran, especially Tabriz in the northwest, beginning in the later nineteenth century. The subdued grayish mauve ground is inhabited by a veritable menagerie of wild beasts: lions, dromedary camels, bears, gazelles, cranes beavers, rabbits and tree climbing leopards. The designers were obviously working from illustrated books on animals. The beaver is not native to Persia, but is purely North American. The fauna cavort, climb, rest and stalk in a forest of flowering trees, palmettes, vines, shrubs and rosettes. The straw yellow main border continues the wild beast theme with panthers and wild asses among lancet leaves, complex palmettes and elaborate rosettes. Kerman has been a center of fine carpet making in SE Persia since the late 16th century. Kerman carpet designers have always been artistically attuned to the latest developments in their markets, whether they be historicizing, as here, avant garde or independent and creative as with the 17th century “Vase” carpets. As carpets in museums were published, Kerman created attractive interpretations. The fine weave, high quality materials and well trained artisans have made the long tradition viable for over four centuries.\r\nThis oversize creation from the early 20th century rings changes on the famous “Chelsea Carpet” in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The abrashed mushroom field is centered by a luminous medium blue eight point arabesque medallion with four ogival pendants with cloud bands and paired birds. At each end of the field is a vase and bush. On the original the vases are of distinctly Chinese character, but here they are more Persian. Nearly bare trees, floret bearing tendrils and voluted arabesques with small palmettes add to the pattern. The mulberry cochineal red corners are filled with arabesques and mimic quarters of the medallion. The main border shows a reciprocal lappet design in cochineal wine red and straw. Cloudbands are intertwined with the vinery in both minor borders. The weave is fine on a cotton ground, with asymmetric (Persian) knots and a short pile of resilient local nomadic wool. The proportions of the prototype were longer and narrower, but here the artists have ingeniously redesigned the elements in a fitting and genuine form. The ogival pendants have been borrowed, in modified form, from other early 16th century carpets. Of course, the designers did not work from the original, but from book illustrations. The carpet was published first in the later 19th century, so our piece probably dates from the late 19th century beginning of the 20th century. The unusually wide and large format indicates a special order and we are not familiar with any other closely related example. The prototype dates from the early 16th century although some scholars have considered it Timurid, before 1500. A most ingenious, artistic and wholly credible historicizing take on a classic and this carpet is, as a result, a classic as well.\r\n","brand":"locrugs","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48101585879232,"sku":"U-2806","price":0.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0735\/7028\/7808\/files\/u-2806-oversize-antique-persian-kerman-rug-16.04x21.04-10703.jpg?v=1775206849"},{"product_id":"cu-1146-antique-subdued-persian-distressed-fine-isfahan-rug","title":"CU-1146 - Antique Subdued Persian Distressed Fine Isfahan Rug","description":"A wonderful large antique Isfahan rug. The western Persian Arak (Markazi) Province is the home of hundreds of villages weaving some of the most popular and desired of room size and larger 20th century carpets. With rustic origins, but urban style, Sarouks, Mahals, Sultanabad's and Feraghans, have been universally esteemed by designers and retail clients for their durability, colors, and decorative character. This is a particularly large, almost gallery format, carpet with the universally popular detached floral pattern, the so-called “American Sarouk” allover layout. The pattern has become popular in Germany, Austria, and Italy in the postwar period as a result of rug fashions travelling.\r\nThe pellucid, shimmering near aqua blue field shows rosettes, palmettes, fantasy flowering plants, short vine sections, curled and barbed leaves, and an assortment of other characteristic elements, all detailed in cream, pale blue, and straw. The abrash (naturally evolving color variation) along the length of this carpet gives it a flow as if the vegetal elements were borne on a never-ending stream from one end to the other and beyond. This “river of rug” is contained by a buff-salmon border with barbed, slanted leaves and in – and- out- palmettes. The field is mobile while the border is more fixed. This contrast is found on only exceptional pieces as here. The palette is mellow, but not subdued, and is particularly versatile. The foundation of this carpet, as is general with Sarouks, is all cotton, with a medium-fine weave of Persian (asymmetric) knots. The handle is compact with a leathery texture. The wonderful design in this antique Oushak has a soft beige ground filled with large floral designs enclosed in a gentle blue border.Oushaks are known for their soft palettes combined with eccentric drawing. Oushak in western Turkey has the longest continuous rug weaving history, stretching back at least to the mid-fifteenth century. It has always been oriented commercially, supplying rugs and carpets, from scatters up to enormous mansion sizes, to both the Turkish\/Ottoman domestic markets and to exports into Britain, and America. The best-known family portrait of George Washington has an Oushak beneath the Founder and his family. Doesn’t get more esteemed than that. Of course, the carpets have constantly changed as tastes, trends, styles, and markets evolved. In the late 19th\/early 20th centuries, Persian or Persianate patterns were adopted, and dimensions mutated into Western room sizes. Carpet weaving has expanded far beyond the usual Oriental rug patterns, field\/border distinction, materials, and saturated colors. Indian weavers have taken the lead in using viscose silk for accents and larger tonal areas. The contrast between wholly matte wool and abrashed (natural color variation) tonally mixed viscose silk is something entirely innovative unlike the obvious wool-cotton-silk contrasts on traditional carpets. Light, light, light is a basic trend. The color flows have an almost amoebic character, helped by the carving separating the individual tones. The abstract pattern makes it entirely suitable for the most contempo décor and it even works with eclectic mixes of the alarmingly new and the bold traditional.\r\nAvailable in standard sizes and colors or can be custom made.","brand":"004564","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48101905268928,"sku":"N-3922","price":0.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0735\/7028\/7808\/files\/u-3922-contemporary-viscose-12.00x15.00-7790.jpg?v=1778885110"},{"product_id":"u-3777-classic-style-oushak-rug","title":"U-3777 - Classic Style Oushak Rug","description":"Classic Style Oushak Rug 12'10 x 16'1.
