U-2964 - Large Antique Persian Kerman Rug

Kirman carpets have their own unique style and they resemble no other Persian urban weavings. The designs follow a steady, well-defined evolution. This highly decorative example comes from the 1920’s when extremely well-filled fields were popular. Here swirling large split arabesques tightly embrace a plethora of palmettes, leaves and secondary vines, all in an allover pattern. There are nine decorated borders, all generally in the same subdued tones, emphasizing ivory, buff, tan and dark brown. The largest band has a complex palmette and vinery pattern. The en suite design integration of the field and borders is remarkable. In addition to the floral elements, serpentine cloud bands are tightly fitted into the pattern. The effect is one of an allover patterned giant textile, delicate and precise, yet space filling. The lighter border system makes a fine transition from floor to field, from one sort of pattern to another, from simple juxtaposition to complex inter-connexion. This carpet allows the easy placement of furniture of any scale, any style. It goes with the flow of any design trend and works in any style context. The close pattern makes a wonderful contrast with large scale, unornamented modern décor.
